Recap of 2024: A visualization of the milestones

2024 is a year of significant milestones and achievements for ENCATE. We have successfully launched the Bilateral Exchanges Program and organized important online meetings in collaboration with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) and UNESCO. Below, we summarize the highlights of the year in an infographic.

Yad be Yad: Combatting Antisemitism and Racism Through Education and Dialogue

We interviewed Veronica Sartore to learn about the Yad be Yad project at KUBUS e.V., which brings together young people affected by antisemitism and racism, including Jews, Muslims, and migrants, as well as those interested in Jewish and Muslim life who wish to engage in combating antisemitism and racism. The project offers workshopsfor both schools and adults, aiming to empower participants and engage a broader society.

Empowering Education: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Addressing Antisemitism and Discrimination

We interviewed Oana Nestian-Sandu to gain insight into the benefits of interdisciplinary approaches to countering discrimination. During the interview, Oana discussed the importance of a human rights approach to Holocaust education. She explained how this approach can help students connect the past with the present and recognize dangerous patterns in today’s world.

How We Can Create Safe and Brave Educational Spaces to Discuss Difficult Issues

Many controversial and difficult issues have come up in our social discourse in the last few years, from Brexit to identity politics. Teachers have a responsibility to provide an impartial and safe space for young people to discuss and learn about such issues and make up their own minds, but this is not an easy task when emotions are running high. The first thing that needs to be acknowledged and addressed before a process of listening and exchanging opinions can be undertaken is the strong negative emotion that impedes this process.

An Activist’s Perspective on Human Rights Challenges in Slovakia

We conducted a thought-provoking interview with Peter Weisenbacher, founder of the Human Rights Institute, a new ENCATE member, in which he candidly shared his experiences navigating the increasingly challenging landscape for human rights defenders in Slovakia, addressing issues ranging from online hate to systemic racism against the Roma minority and the aftermath of a tragic shooting.

The ENCATE network announced its new Steering Committee following an internal election process to guide the network in 2024-25. As outlined in the announcement, three seasoned members from the previous committee, Ali Amla, Anna Zielińska and Dr. Juliane Wetzel will continue their impactful work, joined by two new members, Murilo Cambruzzi of the CDEC Foundation and Tamas Buchler of the Haver Foundation.
