Countering Antisemitism through Education

ENCATE is a network for civil society organizations that counter antisemitism and other forms of discrimination. Our members educate a variety of audiences to identify and address different manifestations of antisemitism.

At the same time, as a European civil society network, ENCATE,

  • is a vital partner for governments, civic actors, and international organizations because it conveys hands-on experience and expertise;
  • acknowledges the relevant past and current work of Jewish organizations as well as of international institutions, networks, and NGOs as a frame of reference;
  • strives to have a complementary role and to add value to the field.

Important to note, ENCATE was established by KIgA e.V. in 2019. Since the beginning, we have adopted the IHRA’s working definition of antisemitism including annexed examples.

  • learning platform

  • umbrella structure

Our theory of change is to empower civil society by providing them with

  • a platform of co-learning and exchange for acquiring knowledge and educational skills to counter antisemitism and exploring new approaches and inspiration
  • an umbrella structure that improves communication and cooperation with policymakers and stakeholders

Partners

KIgA e.V. established ENCATE in May 2019 as an informal platform.

The development of this network would not be possible without the great support of our funders and the cooperation with our partners. We are grateful to all the partners who have stood by us.

  • Dare Together project is co-funded by the European Union in 2023 and 2024.
  • Federal Foreign Office has generously supported several ENCATE projects since 2019.
  • Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union, Foreign Office or other partners. Neither the European Union nor the Foreign Office can be held responsible for them.

We have cooperated with distinguished partners, including the Center for Research on Antisemitism at TU Berlin, OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Short story

A new network is emerging

Countering Antisemitism through Education (ENCATE) organized its first Network Meeting between October 23 and 25, 2019, in Berlin. As KIgA, the initiator of the Network, we hosted the representatives of 20 civil society organizations from 13 European countries.

ENCATE established to counter antisemitism in Europe

German nonprofit KIgA e.V. is establishing the European Network for Countering Antisemitism through Education (ENCATE) with an opening ceremony today in the German Foreign Office with the participation of H.E. Heiko Maas.

Founded in 2003, the Kreuzberg Initiative against Antisemitism (KIgA e.V.) was one of the first German civil society initiatives to develop educational methods for addressing antisemitism.

KIgA works with complex, sensitive, and contentious topics. Specifically, it focuses on the past and current forms of antisemitism, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, anti-Muslim racism, and historical-political education.
